A young German fell in the sea and died after a sailboat ran him over
THE MINISTRY of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure revealed details pertaining to an accident in which a 26-year-old German died.
Yesterday, the man fell from a sailboat into the sea in the waters between Solta and Vis and died at the scene from injuries sustained from the boat's propellers, the Split-Dalmatia County Police Administration reported.
The accident happened yesterday morning.
The Ministry of the Sea reported more detailed information.
"Officers of the National Maritime Rescue Coordination Center Rijeka (MRCC Rijeka) received a report from the crew of the sailboat 'Capella' on August 2, at 11.45, regarding the death of one crew member of that boat near the island of Solta.
Officials of the Port Authority of Split and the Milna Port Branch Office were immediately informed of the event, and hurried to the site of the accident with a medical escort," reads the Ministry's report.
His body was trapped below sea level
"MRCC Rijeka also informed the Split Maritime and Airport Police Station of the event, and the officers sailed to the site of the accident with divers from the Special Police, accompanied by the Deputy County State Attorney.
Arriving at the site of the maritime accident, at about 0.5 nM from the south side of the island of Solta, the officers from the Port Authority of Split and Milna Port Branch found a sailboat with the remaining, uninjured crew members (seven in total, including the senior crew member), whereas the body of the injured crew member remained trapped below sea level, under the stern of the sailboat, near the propeller, from which he most likely sustained life-threatening injuries," reads the report.
"Inspection of the ship's documentation confirmed the identity of T.T. (born in 1994), a citizen of the Republic of Germany, who was on a sailboat owned by a Croatian charter company with other crew members, also German citizens," the Ministry reports.
He fell into the sea, the sailboat ran him over
The reason for the fall is not yet known.
"According to the testimony of the senior crew member of the sailboat, D.R. (born in 1986), the deceased young man fell from the sailboat into the sea, the sailboat ran him over, and he remained trapped under the stern where he sustained fatal injuries from the propeller.
The cause of this serious accident is to be investigated by the officers of the Port Authority of Split and the Port Branch Office of Milna after a police investigation, which will determine the cause of death and the course of events that preceded the tragic accident.
Other than the rescue boat of the Milna Port Branch Office, 'Pojisan', the main rescue ship of the Port Authority of Split, sailed to the site of the accident in order to provide support in securing the site of said maritime accident, i.e., the perimeter of the police investigation," reads the Ministry's report.
